Final Course Reflection

Obviously my all time favorite part of this coarse was the video game and E sports category of this class, i absolutely love how big this industry has grown in such a short time and cant wait to be apart of it myself making the things I’ve played my whole life. I think going more in depth with policy and learning what law makers have tried to do to the industry and what they are trying to do now is very interesting. Learning more about net neutrality and how it works / how it will affect us was interesting, though i knew all about this it still is nice to be reminded just how infuriating higher up officials can be with these laws. Both policy and social issues are here are so important for my work soon and i’m interested to see where all these things are gonna go. I did learn a lot of stuff that i did not know in this industry though like how the loot box dilemma truly started as well as the gamer gate fiasco as well.

I loved the lectures on the history of gaming and what started it all. It is always so much fun to just look back at all the history that started it all and where we are today, its such a drastic evolution in hardware. learning more and more about the VR area was also super fun as i didn’t know some of the content there either. i wish this area of the lectures could have been longer but i understand that we have a time limit on how much time can be put to one thing.

For our project i think i particularly enjoyed what we did, granted i wanted to do something more tech’y with gaming but our wonder sleep product was not to shabby. The team did an ok job though they were all very last minute, everything came together and they all upheld their end of the bargain. I think these team based projects turned out pretty good and it wasn’t to bad working with others. The wonder sleep was definitely a interesting topic to take as mattresses today are not actually that much involved with technology, barring a few exceptions. All and all out product was pretty unique and i am happy with how our product was represented.

In the end i think this class was a lot of fun and i’m glad my roommate Stanley recommended this class for my upper division class, it was a lot of fun and i learned a lot in here. I think the overall teachings in this class were not crazy hard and the lectures were very fun. The quiz’s were never difficult which i found surprising as well. Glad to have been in this class.

FOMO

Honestly in my own life i don’t really care about fomo all that much. The only thing that may be closest to fomo is the midnight releases for huge movies as i always want to go to those for the experience. As to others i actually dont know anyone that has this issue, i have never been much into it and i don’t really look for it in anyone so i’m unsure about fomo in the end. so yes i feel bad to people that have this addiction but i nor do others i know have this addiction to fomo.

Photo Manipulation

I believe that America should take on laws that France have incorporated, To many women look at these images at a young age and think that a perfect women is what they see in the magazines, but the fact is that the perfect women doe not exist when these images are so drastically changed that it is impossible. I think what France is doing is totally a morally and amazing thing to do, it instills a real trust to the people of the country and the media that is being given to them. They can see the media and believe what they see as well as they know exactly what the media thinks a perfect women can be which is realistic at least. America lets way too much photo manipulation go through and its a total shame because a lot of women look to this media and can never ever get the perfect women look but keep on trying anyways. So yes i think America should take on these laws that France is using.

Inclusive Video Games

To an extent as a game designer we need to appeal to as many players as possible as to sell as many copies of a game as possible. But to disabilities and other areas can be a lot harder and resource intensive to do so. Appealing to literally everyone would be impossible to do so, but appealing to as many as you can is definitely the goal. I think that the divide between men and women in games has a gross divide that needs to just be accepted in the gaming world, as well as sexual orientation within a game. Now representation and portrayal in video games are almost all the same with it being a women in danger in need of saving, big breasts and blonde hair. The portrayal of women have been like this since the beginning of games. I think more and more games are beginning to allow the player create their own character in which they can play throughout the game, i think this is becoming more popular and is very healthy for gaming as a whole. Now developing for disabilities is a lot harder to accommodate, its difficult to gauge a read at what a player needs or if it is even possible to do so. I think money really is an issue when it comes down to this.

Digital Divide

I believe that everyone around the world deserves to have access to computers and the internet. These things have such a great effect on us in today’s world, it has so much knowledge and if everyone had such access to the internet and computers then us as humans would become far more advanced then we already are. The fact is there is a huge margin of people in the United States that done even have internet or even computers for that matter. This should never be the case when we are a 1st world country that strives to be the best. With homework in schooling becoming more and more computer internet based we should be providing internet and computers to the students who literally will require it for their work. We could help these students by allowing these students to use the school computer labs after school and on weekends to do their work. Just like in college these labs are always open for us so should theirs as well.

Future of the Music Industry

I think that music can never truly die but with the ever growing threat of the internet, the music industry will have to start regulating and transitioning from physical revenue which was down by 5.4% and going into streaming 100% which was up by 41.1%. People in this day and age listen to music through Pandora or Spotify or any other streaming service and the revenue will have to start getting higher for the artists to convert fully into this platform. Sadly the statistics dont lie with physical being down 5.4% and downloads being down 20.5%, everyone is now listening to this music through streamable services or digital albums. I dont think the music industry can ever die but i do believe if they do not start realizing this new trend in how their consumers ingest their music then we could see the music industry get hurt more than it could flourish.

Sure back in 1999 physical product were 100% the only form of way to get musical content. But now in 2017 physic is not even 1/3 of what it used to be in 1999, it went from 25 billion dollars to 5 billion dollars. The streaming services are now at 6.8 billion dollars which already tops physical right there. These statistics dont lie and are just showing this trend is going to get bigger, us as consumers can consume our music from anywhere on our phones but with physical you are limited extremely to where and how you listen to the music. This ever growing trend will not stop and i think if artists dont hop on board with this trend we may lose artist that have been around and are popular may just get lost and forgotten since this trend calls for it to be streamed and not be physical.

This article talks about how microsoft is sending their games into the cloud at that point anyone who has a 4g and 5g network and uses microsoft azure can try out the beta and see how it works. It all goes through the cloud and then is sent to your phone to tablet that is connected to an xbox controller via bluetooth. This is planned for release in 2019 they are hoping.

They plan on competing with consoles and pc industries such at steam and epic games stores. They started sending out invitations to their keynote last month for the even at GDC in march.

Kickstart Start

One of the most exciting technologies/communications is the Esports world. I absolutely love watching it and getting to go to them is a whole other experience. In particular I watch the Overwatch esports league that happens yearly, I find this particular form of technology to be very exciting and think looking more into it could be rather exciting. This form of communication I believe links in a lot of players of that specific game and gives them something to watch and get competitive over like football teams. Our generation considers these esports games to be comparative to actual sports games. These events I think adhere to our generation of gamers that love to play them and even more to see these games played at such a high level of experience that its almost to a whole other level. People say going to these large championship matches is something else, that the air is like lightning and that the experience with other people just like that fellow person is amazing. I think this specific topic can be really exciting to research especially since esports winning for teams can run upwards of 1 million dollars. This topic is no small thing and I think it is only going to grow larger.
